Preserving Tradition: The Art of Handcrafted Clay Salsa Dishes from Puebla

The clay salsa dish is crafted by Maricela Contreras Alvarez, who hails from San Miguel Tenextatiloyan, Puebla. This dish is part of a long-standing tradition in her family, which has been passed down for generations. Maricela learned how to make these products as a child, under the guidance of her grandparents, and has been officially working in this craft for 20 years. The process remains completely handmade, using traditional methods that her ancestors used.
The materials used in making the dish, including the clay and molds, come from a nearby hill, and everything is fired in an oven to finish the product. A team of 15 people is involved in various stages of the production process, including glazing, firing, painting, molding, and packing. This product is part of a vital tradition for the town, as it is one of the main activities in the area, and passing it on ensures the continuation of their heritage.
Maricela is happy to see her family’s products being sold internationally, especially in the U.S., and hopes that people not only appreciate the quality of the items but also the rich history and tradition behind them.
